Windows 11 driver issue for Upgrade Cable

Windows 11 discontinued support for the chipset used in the Upgrade Cable, follow these instructions to get it working again

Microsoft dropped support for the USB to Serial converter chipset used in the CSS-UPG-CBL update cable in Windows 11.

If you are trying to update the firmware in a Micro or SpaceX, and are having issues detecting the fixture, this might be the issue.

Check driver status

Open Windows Device Manager application, with the upgrade cable plugged in

If you see the following text under Ports (COM & LPT), you will have to update the driver

Uninstall PL2303TA device

Right click on PL2303TA device and select "Uninstall Device".  Select "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" and click Uninstall

Download driver below and install

  • Download the file below and extract the contents of the ZIP file (right click, Extract All)
  • Right-click the PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.12.0.exe and Run as administrator. Please refer to the below image.

Wait a minute after install, then try again

After re-installing the provided driver, the cable should work again.  Device Manager should now show a functioning device as below:
