Creamsource has launched a new set of lenses for the Vortex in 2024, with Narrow, Intermediate, and Wide angles.
As part of our effort to provide more versatility and flexibility to the Vortex family, we have added three new lenses to our lighting modifier family, in addition to providing a 1-to-1 replacement for the previous model of flat diffuser (the old MED Diffuser is now called XWIDE Lens).
Normal Orientation - Logo Facing Outwards
The lenses' normal orientation is with the logo facing outwards (e.g., the shiny side of the material facing away from the LEDs).
The beam angles below were measured with the logo facing OUTWARDS.
LENS | EFFECTIVE BEAM ANGLE (on Hards*) |
EFFECTIVE BEAM ANGLE (on Softs*) |
DIFFUSION | INDICATOR COLOUR |
NARROW | 30° | 105° | Lightest | Blue |
INTERMEDIATE | 50° | 110° | ... | Green |
WIDE | 85° | 125° | ... | Red |
XWIDE | 100° | 110° | Heaviest | Plain / Silver |
*The native beam angle on the Hards is 20° while the native beam angle on the Softs is 110°.
Note the NARROW lens has the lightest diffusion effect while the XWIDE lens has the heaviest diffusion effect.
What happens if you reverse the lenses?
On the Vortex Hards, lens orientation doesn't make much difference - the beam angle is slightly reduced if running reversed (logo facing inwards).
On the Vortex Softs, however, reversing the lens actually makes it work like an intensifier, and decreases the beam angle!
The beam angles below were measured with the logo facing INWARDS.
LENS | EFFECTIVE BEAM ANGLE (on Hards) |
EFFECTIVE BEAM ANGLE (on Softs) |
NARROW | 25° | 100° |
INTERMEDIATE | 30° | 85° |
WIDE | 40° | 80° |
XWIDE | 100° | 110° |
Medium Diffuser Replaced by XWIDE Lens
The new XWIDE Lens replaces the old Medium Diffuser. It has very similar beam angle and diffusion levels, and they can be used interchangeably.
Old Medium Diffuser and new XWIDE Lens can be used interchangeably.
